Fat Princess

The Lesbian Gamers (”because sometimes we use our hands for other things”) website has an interesting post about an upcoming Playstation 3 downloadable game called Fat Princess. It’s causing a bit of a stir, because the object of the game is to try and figure out how to pick up and move this chubby chick.

“It’s your job as player to rescue your beloved princess from the enemy dungeon. There’s a catch though: your adversary has been stuffing her with food to fatten her up and it’s going to take most of your army working together to carry her back across the battlefield”

Okay, now excuse me while I ROFL, but I think this is a fucking great idea for a game! It’s simple, and cute as all hell. Sometimes we need to have cute alternatives to the high density, major learning-curve games like Metal Gear Solid 4 and its ilk…

<fanboy>It’s nice to know we can now get them without having to go buy a Nintendo Wii!</fanboy>

Lesbian Gamers also makes a very good point against sites like this and (more importantly) this, by asking if people would be less pissed off if the female character was svelte and big breasted instead of fat and loved so much that an entire army will rush to rescue her.

Would it be better if the fat girl was a fat guy? How about if it was a team of feminists that had to rescue a chauvenist that was being weighed down by sexist ideals? Every sexist idea that is removed, ligthens the chauvenist, but adds ’superiority complex’ points to the team of feminists, thereby weighing them down. Finding the balance would be the key to winning…

Personally, I don’t know and don’t care… It doesn’t sound like a hateful or hurtful game to me. It actually sounds quite fun and certainly very cute. In fact, I think that the game may end up raising awareness to obesity issues via the very controversy that’s being generated from the premise of the game!

I look forward to playing it. I just hope that all of these freaked out people don’t make Sony decide to pull the game altogether.
