Six dead in massive Kwazulu-Natal floods
Torrential downpours starting Tuesday evening caused major road blockages, destruction of bridges and property, as well as the death of at least six people. Others are still missing, injured or marooned where emergency services cannot reach them.
Two of the dead were children - pupils from Sidelile High School. (Sadly ironic is the fact that the word ’sidelile’ means ‘we had enough’ in the Zulu language).
The bakkie (small truck) in which they were driving was swept off a
bridge and into the swollen Ingane River. Three other pupils who had
been in the vehicle survived, although there is still another missing
and the driver has not been found either.
In the early hours of Wednesday morning, Durban International Airport had to be shut down as the storm lashed the countryside and a British Airways plane skidded off the runway. None of the 87 passengers or six crew were injured. The airport was closed late into Wednesday afternoon, reopening at 3pm.
